Trimming long coat GSD head
by: Deb & Dakota

I agree with what Debbie said. I always make sure to tell the groomers to NOT cut or trim any of her feathers or long hairs.

I do ask them to do a 'poodle cut' on her feet. Kota's paw hair grows incredibly fast! I have the groomer shave off all the hair around the paw pads, then trim and tidy up the hairs between her toes on the top.

I would never cut or trim my long-coat GSD's head. I think that is one of her greatest attributes.

Long Coated GSD grooming
by: Debbie

I've owned several Long Coated GSDs over the years and I've never clipped any of them other than the occassional mat that was past combing out or for surgical reasons.

Basically you groom them the same way as a short coated German Shepherd - full body comb including the tails and all the feathered areas behind the legs and around the face and ears.

I have heard of people trimming up the coat or around the toes when it gets unruly with that wild hair that just won't behave but other than that I wouldn't suggest clipping a Long Coated GSD - just a small trim if needed in those "unkempt" areas to make them look neater.
