Hi Bette,I completely agree with you. I have this book on my night stand and often refer to it with the other GS articles that I have there to read at night.

Monks of New Skete
by: Bette

Please buy or check out from the library The Art of Raising A Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. I literally went page by page as my GSD pup grew up and she developed into the world's greatest, best adjusted dog. :-).

walks
by: Wendy

I agree with Sam about the age, but I do think he needs to be walked. He won't have all his shots yet so i would avoid classes with other dogs, or dog parks where unknown dogs have been to reduce risk of catching something.

Do you have friends with dogs? That way you know they are up to date on vaccines & pup can have a safe play date. Do not walk him too far at this age, especially on concrete or asphalt as his bone plates are not set.

Remember everything is new to him, so let him gradually get used to the big scary world & he will soon be exploring on his own. Good luck.

Scared Puppy
by: SAM

6.5 weeks old! Am I to assume he has already been taken from his litter mates? If so, I feel this was too soon, but I appreciate there are differences of opinion about this.

I would highly recommend puppy socialization classes once your puppy is fully vaccinated. I also recommend speaking to your vet for advice. You may also want to consider hiring a personal dog trainer who can provide you with expert advice to ensure your puppy develops into a well adjusted dog.

I currently own a 5 month old shepherd who is shy of people and other dogs. He was the first to leave (9 weeks) the litter. We work on our socialization skills daily and we have made significant gains. Do everything you can to give your puppy a real chance at life. He deserves it and so do you!!

Good luck.
