Skinny German Shepherd

I have recently aquired a GSD thru one of my husbands co workers. She is a female 1 1/2 years old. My question is how much should she weigh? She looks really skinny and I'm having trouble finding out if that is a GSD trait-to look skinny.

I have never owned a GSD, but I have been around quite a few, but they were all older and fat. Thank you for your time.

skinny GSD
by: maggie

I too have a skinny GSD. I have been worried about him. I rescued him approx 6 months ago and he was larger then he is now, however he has plenty of exercise and although a fussy eater, most days he eats quite well. He is about 30 kg and approx 19 months old.

My vet said he is fine.Hopefully he will soon fill out a little, anyone got any ideas to give him a boost, thanks maggie

Skinny German Shepherd

I have a female GSD that is almost 2 years old and she is very lean, about 72 lbs. As long as your dog has been vet checked and is healthy, don't worry about her weight.

She'll fill out some as she ages, but my vet has checked my girl out thoroughly and is happy with her weight. A little thin is much better health wise than too fat.

adolescent skinny German Shepherd
by: Debbie

She's in that gawky adolescent phase - this is pretty normal for that age. She'll probably fill out in the next six months or so.

Normally German Shepherds can be considered adults when they are around 2 years old for females and around three years old for males and around that time they will often "fill out" into their adult form and not look like skinny teenagers any longer.

In the meantime I'd suggest getting her checked by a vet for worms, a full health exam, etc. but please keep her on the lean side if you can as she ages - it's so much better for the dog especially as they age to keep them thinner - not bony or skinny - but on the lean, athletic side.

Good luck with your new GSD!
