Cody ~ My Best Friend, RIP

by Brittany T.
(Texas)

Cody came into my life just a year and a half ago. I adopted him from a local shelter when I was 7 months pregnant. I just had a feeling and felt that I needed to go there that very day. And there he was. They listed him as a shepherd mix, but a little digging uncovered that he was a Belgian Malinois, with one spotted foot and multicolored nails.

Cody was a wonderful dog from the start. He was extremely tolerant of children, always loving and affectionate, and rarely misbehaved. After having the baby, Cody became my walking buddy and helped me get back in shape, pulling me along during most walks.

His unconditional love is something that will be forever missed. Coming home to his loving face and wet kisses washed away any bad day that I could have had. He even came to me one evening when I was crying. He nuzzled me and gave me his paw. He stayed with my until I stopped crying, and then layed down and went to sleep.

I'll miss his silly grumbles when he slept. I'll miss waking up to him curled up on the couch in the mornings. I'll miss hugging him. I'll miss his golden fur blanketing my clothes. I'll miss playing chase with him around the house.

Cody was staying with relatives while we went out of town for the holidays. They let him potty outside in the front yard, which was located within a few feet of a small highway. Having an extremely high prey drive, Cody darted across the street when he spotted another dog. He was struck by a car and suffered a displaced pelvis, multiple fractures, and severe internal damage.

We had just returned home and rushed to the only vet available, almost 2 hours away. Cody held on long enough for us to love on him and stay with him for a long while. He passed away early the next morning. I was driving out there when I got the call from the vet.

You will be forever loved and missed Cody! Our time together was so short, but I cherished every second of it. My life has been greatly enriched by your presence, and I am eternally grateful for my time with you.
