by Judy Groves
(Warks, UK)

My 10yr 8mth old gsd has been on steroids/antibiotics for 4 months to combat swollen weeping paws and abscesses

I have contracted a similar foot infection
our vet puts it all down to old age....and yes the hips are starting to slip but can gsds get their version of athletes foot and if so is there any treatment?

would it be harmful to apply medication for humans
plse help - I cant bear to see such a beautiful dog suffer, he wants to get out and about but the feet, sorry paws, are too painful

I now have some idea of what hes going thro!
Thx for caring hope you can help

Another option for you.
by: Roon

Go to www.equineelite.com and look at their Body Wash. The best thing to do is call the company and talk to them. Extremely helpfull.

I bathe our GSD with the Body Wash and it gets rid of the itches. There are other products on the website that may help you. Ask them. Good luck.

potential resources for "athletes paw"
by: Debbie

I am sorry your vet seems to have adopted the "it's just an old dog, get used to it being sick" way of thinking. Keep in mind that it is very easy for many kinds of things to be passed back & forth between people and their pets so the foot condition you speak of could just be a symptom of a larger issue.

First of all, if I were you I would seriously suggest cleaning your home floors, anywhere the dog has access to, very very well - an if I were you I'd always wear shoes of some kind too to keep from contracting it further or to keep from passing it back & forth between the two of you.

I have no idea what this would be (I'm not a vet) but I have 2 suggestions for you in an attempt to solve your problems. Here's the first - check out: https://www.total-german-shepherd.com/Ask-the-Vet.html Here you can ask a vet all about your question for a small fee - best of all, they are interested in trying to solve your problem.

Secondly, you might want to delve even deeper by checking into the advice of a Naturopathic Vet to find the real cause of the problem to solve - not just stopping the symptoms. And for that, I can't recommend you anyone any higher than a wonderful scientist from Australia named Sara Rooney.

Her book, "Heal Your Dog Naturally", offers all sorts of advice on treating your dog when they're sick. If you want to find out more, check out the page at: https://www.total-german-shepherd.com/Natural-Dog-Health-Supplements.html

Click on the book photo at the top of the page and it will take you directly to Sara's page to learn even more. I trust Sara implicitly - she is a knowledgeable scientist with many years of experience treating all sorts of animals.

Your own vet hasn't been able to help you yet - why not give these sources a try?
