How well will a young GSD do when left alone during working hours?

by Andrew

I am an officer in the Marine Corps and considering getting my first dog. I have some experience with the working dogs on base (all GSD) and have come to find them to be amazing dogs.

I've been doing a lot of homework to learn how to train them and care for them, and feel confident that I could raise one successfully. My only question remains, how well will a young (1 year-ish) GSD do when left alone during working hours?

My schedule right now is wide open (literally, I work about 3 hours in the mornings) for the next 7 or 8 months. After that I begin normal working hours.

I'm asking if it would be fair to bring the dog into a military lifestyle and schedule. I'm training to be a pilot and the later stages of training can be time consuming, but I'm sure I'd make time to train and care for my dog. Thanks for your thoughts!
